Google Just Moved the Deadline: Why 2029 Is the New Quantum Countdown

Google has officially accelerated its post-quantum cryptography migration timeline — and the new target should wake up every digital asset holder on the planet. In a recent announcement, the tech giant confirmed it is now targeting 2029 for full transition to quantum-safe encryption across its systems. That’s not a vague aspiration. It’s a specific, public commitment from one of the world’s largest technology companies — and it represents a significant acceleration from previous industry assumptions that placed widespread PQC adoption around 2030 or later. The message from Mountain View is clear: the quantum threat is arriving faster than anyone expected.

Why Google Is Moving Faster

Google isn’t shortening this timeline on a whim. The company cited three converging factors driving the acceleration: advances in quantum hardware, breakthroughs in quantum error correction, and updated estimates of how quickly a sufficiently powerful quantum machine could crack today’s encryption standards.

Perhaps most telling is where Google is focusing its urgency. The company has shifted its priority to digital signatures — the cryptographic mechanisms that verify identity and ensure software integrity. Unlike encrypted data in transit, compromised digital signatures could allow attackers to impersonate trusted entities or distribute malicious software. Once a cryptographically relevant quantum computer exists, it’s too late to fix signatures retroactively.

Google is already embedding post-quantum protection into Android 17, Chrome, and its cloud services. The company is also calling on the broader industry to match its pace — a clear signal that the current rate of PQC adoption across enterprises, governments, and financial institutions is dangerously slow.

The “Store Now, Decrypt Later” Clock Is Ticking

Google specifically highlighted the threat of “store now, decrypt later” attacks — where adversaries harvest encrypted data today with the intention of decrypting it once quantum computers mature. This isn’t a theoretical exercise. Nation-state actors and sophisticated threat groups are already stockpiling encrypted communications, financial records, and cryptographic keys.

Every day that passes without quantum-safe encryption in place is another day of vulnerability. The data being harvested right now — your transactions, your keys, your digital identity — doesn’t expire. It just waits for the right quantum machine to unlock it.

What This Means for Digital Assets

If Google — with its virtually unlimited engineering resources — believes it needs to move faster to protect its infrastructure, what does that say about the cryptocurrency ecosystem?
